Happy Birthday, Robert Jackson!

April 1st, 2013  |  Published in Milestone Birthdays

Robert Jackson, who played guard for the Cleveland Browns from 1975 to 1985, is celebrating his 60th birthday today. Jackson played college football at Duke, and he made the team as a rookie free agent in 1975. There is a nice summary of his career on the Browns web site.

Jackson’s 1977 Topps and 1978 Topps cards are pictured here. The 1977 Topps card is his rookie card.

Happy Birthday, John Lee and Scott Laidlaw!

February 17th, 2013  |  Published in Milestone Birthdays

Two players in the Vintage Football Card Gallery, John Lee and Scott Laidlaw, are celebrating their 60th birthday today. Lee was a defensive end from 1976 to 1981 for the San Diego Chargers and New England Patriots, and Laidlaw was a running back from 1975 to 1980 for the Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants. Laidlaw played on three Super Bowl teams in his first four seasons, all with the Cowboys. The Cowboys won one of them, Super Bowl XII, against the Broncos.

As far as I know, Lee did not appear on a football card during his NFL career, but he did appear on a 1974 Nebraska playing card while still in college. That card is shown below. He was one of at least fourteen players in the 1974 Nebraska football deck who later played in the NFL.

Laidlaw appeared on the 1977 Topps card pictured here, as well as a Mexican version of the same card. You can read about the 1977 Topps Mexican cards at toppsmexican.com.

Pat Tilley, a wide receiver who played his entire 11-year NFL career with the St. Louis Cardinals, is celebrating his 60th birthday today. Tilley led the Cardinals in receiving six times–1978 to 1982, and 1985–and he made the Pro Bowl once, in 1980. He is pictured here on his 1977 Topps and 1978 Topps football cards.

Happy Birthday, Art Kuehn and Abdul Salaam!

February 12th, 2013  |  Published in Milestone Birthdays

Two players in the Vintage Football Card Gallery, Art Kuehn and Abdul Salaam, turned 60 today. Kuehn, a center on the original Seattle Seahawks team, played from 1976 to 1983 for the Seahawks and New England Patriots. Kuehn played in two other professional football leagues, as well: he started his career with the World Football League’s California Sun in 1975, and he finished it with the USFL’s Memphis Showboats in 1984 and 1985. Kuehn is shown here on his rookie card, a 1977 Topps.

Abdul Salaam (who changed his name from Larry Faulk in 1977) played defensive tackle for the New York Jets from 1976 to 1983. Salaam, Joe Klecko, Marty Lyons, and Mark Gastineau comprised the “New York Sack Exchange,” the renowned defensive line of the early-80s Jets. Salaam’s 1978 Topps card is pictured below.

Happy Birthday, Louis Carter!

February 6th, 2013  |  Published in Milestone Birthdays

Louis Carter 1976 Topps football cardFormer NFL running back Louis Carter is celebrating his 60th birthday today. Carter played from 1975 to 1978 for the Oakland Raiders and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Carter was one of the original Buccaneers: Tampa Bay acquired him from Oakland in the 1976 NFL Expansion Draft. I learned today, from his profile at bucpower.com, that Carter threw the first touchdown pass in Buccaneer history–in the sixth game of the 1976 season!

Carter appeared on one card in the U.S., the 1977 Topps card pictured here. He also appeared on a 1977 Topps Mexican card. The front of the Mexican card looks like this one, except that it says “Bucaneros” rather than “Buccaneers.”

Happy birthday, Mr. Carter!

Ghosts!

October 31st, 2012  |  Published in Silly Stuff

Red Grange 1933 Sport Kings rookie football cardFor Halloween I thought I’d feature a couple of ghosts. First is a 1933 Sport Kings card of Red “The Galloping Ghost” Grange. This is Grange’s rookie card, one of three football cards in the multi-sport set. You can see the other 1933 Sport Kings football cards in the Vintage Football Card Gallery.

Grange also appeared in cards earlier than this: in 1926, the Shotwell Candy Company distributed two sets of cards featuring just him. I added one of the sets, 1926 Shotwell Red Grange Ad Back cards, to the Gallery earlier this year. Though the Shotwell cards were the first cards of Grange, they are not considered his rookie cards because they are a minor issue.

Dave Casper 1977 Topps rookie football cardThe second card pictured here is Dave “The Ghost” Casper’s rookie card, a 1977 Topps. Seeing Casper reminded me of the Raiders’ famous “Holy Roller” play against the Chargers in 1978. I found the play on YouTube; if you haven’t seen it recently, it’s worth a look.

For some scary football cards, check out my Halloween posts from 2009, 2010, and 2011. Happy trick-or-treating!

I’m Stuck on BAND-AID…

April 28th, 2010  |  Published in Silly Stuff

Don’t you hate it when picture day comes around and you’ve got a big ol’ scab? Or maybe these guys were sponsored by Johnson & Johnson?

Here’s John Cappelletti on his 1977 Topps card and Dave Lloyd on a 1970 Topps.

Here are two 1974 Topps cards: Calvin Hill sporting two bandages, and Dan Goich modeling the XL model.

Topps used images from the same photo session for six of Joe Namath’s cards from 1968 to 1970. Unfortunately, he had a bandage on his head. Here are Namath’s 1968 Topps Stand Up and 1970 Topps cards; see his gallery page for the whole array.

Topps used images from the same photo session for a couple of Roger Staubach’s cards, too. Steve Liskey, from thecowboysguide.com, pointed out the bandage on Staubach’s 1975 Topps card. (Thanks, Steve!) I thought the image looked familiar, so I looked through Staubach’s earlier cards and found that the bandage had made its debut on his 1974 Topps card.

Here’s Les Richter with a boo-boo on his forehead on his regular 1961 Fleer card and on his 1961 Fleer Wallet Picture. Fleer used the same images for players who appeared in both sets.

Finally, we have Doug Cunningham on his 1972 Topps card. Remove his bandage, add some eyeliner, and he’s Gomez Addams!
