New in the Gallery: NFL Players Whose Numbers Have Been Retired

Last week the Chicago Bears announced that the team will retire Mike Ditka’s number in December. This prompted me to add a page to the Vintage Football Card Gallery that shows all of the NFL players whose jersey numbers have been retired. For the players who appear on cards in the Gallery, I tried to find cards that showed them wearing their numbers. Check out the new page!

Maybe a subsection could be players who wore numbers after they were supposedly retired. I don’t know about other teams but for the NY Giants, after Ray Flaherty’s #1 was retired (he left the Giants in 1935) Frank Cope wore #1 in 1946; Supposedly Tuffy Leemans’ #4 was retired in 1940, but he wore it through 1943 and Leland Shaffer was #4 in 1945.

Thanks for the comments, Mike. I’ll add those notes when I get a chance. I have read about exceptions and informally retired numbers for other teams, as well.
